....First, there are shape differences, which are clearly due to functional specialisaion. The rat T2 is widely separated from the main mass of data, i.e. it is a very different shape. These is because of a functional specialisation, the necessity to attach muscles running between the occiput and the back and so maintain elevation of the head during quadrupedal stance and locomotion, leading to the presence of a large dorsal spinous process.
